Emotional guide to provide support with empathy and without pressure

Moving from home is always a challenge. Leaving behind a familiar space, objects with history, routine, neighbors, even family noises... represents a small loss that stirs us up inside. Now imagine what it means for an older adult to move not only from home, but to a residence: a new stage, a different environment, and often the feeling of closing a cycle.

Moving to a residence can generate fear, sadness, resistance and uncertainty, even if it is your decision and the best for your well-being. As a family and residence, our task is to accompany that process with love, without minimizing what they feel.

‍

🧠 Understanding the fear of change

The human being needs stability, and any change, however positive, is a symbolic loss. For older adults, change can trigger deep fears:

  • "Will I lose my independence?"
  • "Who will take care of me?"
  • "What will happen to my memories, my things, my space?"
  • "What if I feel alone or out of place?"

These feelings are normal. Validating them is the first step in helping you manage them.

‍

How to accompany without pressing?

1. Active listening

Before explaining how good the change will be, listen to what they feel. Perhaps they are not opposed to the concept, but rather to the way in which they feel treated or the speed with which the decision is presented to them.

Avoid phrases like:

"You can’t live alone anymore", "It’s for your own good", "You have no choice".

Instead, try to:

"I understand you are afraid of this", "I would like to know what you think", "I am here to listen to you".

‍

2. Involve them in the decision

  • Do not exclude them. Showing them options, letting them know the place, talking to staff, giving feedback on their room or activities, gives them a sense of control.
  • Remember, the older adults concerned make the decision.
  • If they will require a residence for any assisted situation, as a child I advise you to accompany, so that together they make the decision.

‍

 3. Presents residency as an opportunity

Many older people associate residence with abandonment, a cold place or dependence.

Break that myth with facts:

  • Delicious and nutritious food every day
  • Cultural, social and recreational activities
  • Medical and nursing care, not alone
  • Safe, adapted and accompanied spaces
  • Free time to do what they like, without worries
  • Remember: it is not the "end of the road", it is a new stage with quality of life.

‍

4. Make previous visits, without commitment

Nothing lessens anxiety like getting to know what you previously only imagined.

Invite them to visit the residence:

  • Attend a meal or event together
  • Chat with other residents
  • Take a walk around the garden or facilities
  • Sit back and watch the atmosphere
  • These experiences open doors and decrease rejection.
  • If the residence has trial stay promotions, take it.

‍

5. Facilitates a gradual transition (if possible)
